Ex Machina starts out as the main character, Caleb, is shown winning a contest, as he is notified by some means of electronic communication. After he is congratulated, he is shown to be flying via helicopter over a vast forest, and it is then known that he is flying to the house of the CEO of Caleb's company, called Bluebook, a search engine company. After landing the helicopter in a field and walking briefly through a forest, Caleb finds the house of CEO, Nathan. He then gets a key card to the house and finds the CEO working out in the backyard. He is shown to his room by the CEO, who then asks him whether Caleb likes the room to which Caleb timidly replies he does. Nathan then tells Caleb that the he senses that Caleb is upset with the windowless and subterranean room, but that there is a reason for such measures. He then says he is researching something groundbreaking and when Caleb signs a non-disclosure agreement. After signing an agreement giving Nathan complete access to searching any and all of Caleb's communication methods.
Session 1:
Caleb first meets Ava, the humanoid robot programmed with the artificial intelligence Nathan developed.
Session 2:
Ava shows Caleb a picture she drew. Ava has no idea what she drew and asks Caleb what it is. Caleb then responds that most people try to replicate images they have seen when they draw pictures. In the scene, Ava walks around asking questions about Caleb and this is when we see Ava take control.
Session 3:
Ava shows Caleb yet a new drawing. This time its a still life of something she has seen. She also brings up that if she were able to escape the facility, she would go to a traffic intersection, to see a shifting point of view of human life. It becomes obvious in this scene that Ava truly wishes to be seen as human. After revealing where she wants to go, she puts on clothes and says that she would like to go together with Caleb to such a place.
After session 3 Caleb became suspicious that Nathan programmed Ava to flirt with him. However, Nathan says she was programmed to respond as female, but not necessarily to flirt with him.
Session 4:
A power outage happens and Ava reveals she is causing them. During the power outage, she says that Nathan is a liar and not to be trusted.
After the session Caleb realizes he was not chosen at random for the Turing test and that Nathan did indeed lie to him. Caleb writes it off when Nathan explains that he was chosen for his knowledge of code.
Session 5:
Ava shows Caleb a picture of him that she drew. Nathan however ripped it in half, thus causing Caleb to distrust Nathan even more and side with Ava. This makes Caleb wonder what will happen to Ava if she does not pass Nathan's test. Ava becomes mad when it is brought up that anyone has the ability to shut her off and why someone should be allowed to do so.
Caleb then asks Nathan what his plans are for Ava after the test, to which Nathan responds that he will update her and she will not have any memories of all that has happened, in essence, killing her. Nathan continues to get drunk when talking to Caleb. As soon as Nathan passes out, Caleb steals Nathan's pass and goes into his room and writes a program on his computer. Caleb also finds graphic videos of previous robots Nathan built that destroyed themselves trying to escape from the facility. He then bumps into Kyoko, the maid, and she reveals herself to be a robot as well by peeling off her skin.
Session 6:
Before session 6, Caleb is shown to be cutting himself, seemingly in an attempt to check if he himself is human. During the session, Ava once again shuts down the power and Caleb presents a plan for Ava to escape. Caleb would get Nathan drunk and reprogram the system using his key card so that during lock down, all doors will unlock. Caleb would then lock Nathan in his own room and Ava and Caleb would escape together.
After the session, Caleb tries to get Nathan drunk however Nathan refuses to drink, saying that he needs to quit drinking. Nathan also reveals that Ava may not be simulating feeling, but has the capacity to feel, however choose to pretend to feel for Caleb. Thus using Caleb as a means to escape.
At 10pm the power cut happens and Caleb reveals that he did all of the actions the day before. Ava then escapes, killing Nathan in the process, and trapping Caleb in Nathan's room to die.
