film Maker's Intent
Ex Machina
Detail OneThe main concept the film maker wanted to explore with this film was how the understanding of AI relates to the understanding of human consciousness [2].
This can be seen where the other robots presented in the film, like Kyoko, never truly defy Nathan. They only do what they are told because they do not have artificial intelligence. However, since Ava has reached this state, she can disobey Nathan. |
Detail TwoIgnored Asimov's three laws:
Yeah, yeah, this is really good, but this whole thing about tech companies Hoover-ing up information from mobile phones is just too ridiculous. They’re not going to be doing that.” Understanding of AI means understanding of consciousness [2] |
Detail ThreeCan machines achieve consciousness? This is dealt with when Nathan and Caleb discuss whether a chess agent knows if it is playing chess. They indirectly discuss the concepts of strong and weak AI, where weak AI just acts intelligent and strong AI is actually intelligent [3]. |
INTERESTING NOTE:
One interesting thing from the movie is that in the scene where Caleb rewrites the security protocol, the function he writes actually outputs the ISBN number for a book called Embodiment and the Inner Life: Cognition and Consciousness in the Space of Possible Minds [4]. This novel was actually what inspired the director to write and direct this movie [5].
