Ex MachinaPlot:
A programmer named Caleb Smith who works for a company named Blue Book, which is implied in the film to be an analog to Google, wins a contest where he gets to spend a week with the CEO of Blue Book, Nathan Bateman. Upon arrival, he is told that the real reason why he is sent to the secluded "vacation" is to be the human component of a Turing test. He proceeds to have several sessions where he gets to know the AI named Ava. She has a humanoid appearance and seems capable of responding in ways that a normal human would. Their first couple sessions seem to be like ice breakers where they are just getting to know each other. Caleb eventually begins to be romantically attracted to Ava, and begins to empathize with her. Nathan tells Caleb after one of their debriefings that he believes the next AI will be the true revolution, implying that he will destroy or alter Ava. Since he empathizes with Ava, Caleb wants to protect her and devises a plan to escape with her. Caleb is able to alter the security protocols of the facility when Nathan gets drunk, and the next day the breakout begins when Ava uses induction plates to cause a black out. During the confusion, Nathan knocks out Caleb and attempts to "kill" Ava and maintain order, but ends up being killed when Ava impales him with a knife. Ava returns to Caleb, but tells him to wait for her. She proceeds to leave him locked in the facility and escapes to civilization.
