Work and Wealth
“Is it morally acceptable to work on the development of an intelligent machine if we cannot be sure that the machine’s actions will be benevolent?”
“How will we ensure that intelligent robots will not be put to an evil purpose by a malevolent human?”
“How will we ensure that intelligent robots will not be put to an evil purpose by a malevolent human?”
This movie is particularly related to the ethical issues related to the creation of intelligent robots. It demonstrates what may be consequences of developing such robots. Ava is an example of personal AI mentioned in the textbook.
Since Ava and her previous versions are the first intelligent robot prototypes in the movie world, Nathan and Caleb are still trying to decide whether they are real personal AI. If Ava is truly a personal AI and has the same rights as humans, it is illegal for Nathan to keep her in the room because law forbids slavery and servitude. From Kantian point of view, it is immoral to treat Ava as property because she is treated as a means to the end to improve technology and people should never treat others as means to an end. However, it is very difficult to decide whether Ava has her own free will or her behavior is just following the program.
The plot of the movie also raises the same questions asked in the textbook. The escape of Ava actually results in the death of Nathan and Caleb trapped inside the facility. Nathan seems to never think about the potential moral issues of developing such intelligent robot. He never thought that the robot he build could hurt him. He doesn’t actually has any fail safe mechanism to prevent robot from hurting people except locking Ava in a room.
Therefore, it is important to think about the ethical issues of highly intelligent robot before it is too late.
